August 2018 - John M. Powers

John M. Powers, graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in chemistry in 1967 and a Ph.D. in dental materials and mechanical engineering in 1972. He was Professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Ann Arbor, from 1972-1988. He was Professor at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston from 1988-2005, where he also served as department Chair and Associate Dean for Research. He founded the Houston Biomaterials Research Center and served as Director from 1994-2005. Since 2005, he has been Clinical Professor of Oral Biomaterials at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. He is also Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where he is a consultant to the Michigan Pittsburgh Wyss Regenerative Medicine Resource Center.

Marian F. Young is Chief of the Molecular Biology of Bones and Teeth Section in the Craniofacial and Skeletal Diseases Branch of the NIDCR. She received her Ph.D. in developmental biology from the Department of Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut. After a fellowship in the Lab of Developmental Biology and Anomalies at the NIDR Young headed a group in the Mineralized Tissue Research Branch where she began her investigations on the molecular biology and function of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in skeletal tissues. Her current research focuses on regulation and function of small proteoglycans in mineralized tissues and in their potential role in controlling pathological skeletal conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and ectopic ossification.

June 2018 - Ana Karina Mascarenhas

Ana Karina Mascarenhas, B.D.S., M.P.H., Dr.P.H. is the Associate Dean of research at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine.

Mascarenhas has a B.D.S. degree from Goa College and Hospital in India and also holds a M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with an emphasis on oral epidemiology. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and Fellow in Dental Surgery of the College Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She has held positions at The Ohio State University, Columbus and Boston University’s Goldman School of Dental Medicine where she was the Graduate Program Director for Dental Public Health, and the project director for Boston University’s Robert Wood Johnson Community-Based Dental Education Program. She also held an appointment at Forsyth Institute, Boston, Massachusetts.

Mascarenhas serves on the editorial boards of journals, is a statistical consultant for Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Endodontics, she has chaired Health and Human Resource Administration Independent Review Panels and has served on review panels for NIH and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality.

May 2018 - Stefan Hans-Klaus Ruhl

Stefan Hans-Klaus Ruhl is a Professor of Oral Biology and Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He earned his D.D.S. in 1984 and Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of Göttingen, Germany. His postdoctoral work took place from 1989-1994 at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Ruhl was Professor of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology at the University of Regensburg in Germany before he moved to the US in 2007.

Athena Papas is the Distinguished Professor of Diagnostic Sciences, the Erling Johansen Professor of Dental Research and the Head of the Division of Oral Medicine at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Mass, where she has worked in an environment conducive to  research for over 40 years. She received her dental degree from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in Oral Biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
