2017 IADR Distinguished Service Award Presented to Harold Sgan-Cohen

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) has announced that Harold Sgan-Cohen is the recipient of the 2017 IADR Distinguished Service Award. He was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, Wednesday, March 22, 2017, in San Francisco, Calif., USA. This meeting is being held in conjunction with the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research and the 41st Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.

Sgan-Cohen is a professor in public health dentistry at The Hebrew University - Hadassah, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel. Since 1992, he has been the chief dental health advisor and coordinator for community programs, Public Health Division, Jerusalem Municipality. His research interests include the epidemiology of dental caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer, and the psycho-social determinants of oral health. His research on early childhood caries has described the high prevalence of this disease in Israel. Additionally, his research on caries among children and adults in Israel has revealed the changing epidemiological trends – an increase until 1970-1980s and a decrease thereafter. In research based on data from the World Health Organization and the World Bank, Sgan-Cohen revealed the association between dental caries levels and poverty, as a rising and then declining curve.

He has served as the president of the IADR Israeli Division. He has also been an IADR Regional Board Member (representing the IADR Pan European Region), a member of the IADR Constitution Committee and a member of the IADR Global Regional Task Force.

“IADR is honored to present the 2017 IADR Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Harold Sgan-Cohen,” said IADR President Jukka Meurman. “He has been a dedicated member of IADR and its Israeli Division, and is committed to the mission of advancing research and increasing knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide.”

Sponsored by J. Morita Corporation, the IADR Distinguished Service Award was established by the IADR Board of Directors to recognize a member who has not served as an IADR Officer, but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time. This year, Harold Sgan-Cohen is being honored for decades of dedicated service to the Association and its mission.
