Mutlu Özcan Received the 2018 IADR Wilmer Souder Award

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Mutlu Özcan, University of Zurich, Switzerland, as the 2018 recipient of the 2018 IADR Wilmer Souder Award. Özcan was recognized at the Opening Ceremonies of the 96th General Session of the IADR, held in conjunction with the IADR Pan European Regional (PER) Congress. The IADR/PER General Session & Exhibition is in London, England at the ExCeL London Convention Center from July 25-28, 2018.

Özcan is Head of Dental Materials Unit at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Materials Science at the University of Zurich, Centre for Dental and Oral Medicine, Switzerland. She obtained her Dr. Med. Dent. from the Medical and Dental School of Cologne, Germany and her Ph.D. from the University Medical Centre Groningen, Netherlands.

Özcan’s research is focused on reconstructive dentistry and translational research on dental biomaterials involving adhesive dentistry, surface coatings, surface conditioning methods, adhesion promoters, aging phenomena of dental tissues and biomaterials as well as clinical longevity of dental reconstructions. The results of her continuous research efforts have been the development of materials, protocols and concepts for less invasive and economic dental therapies for the dental community.

Özcan has authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers and nine book chapters, filed four patents and presented over 250 lectures world-wide — 170 of which were keynote lectures. She has endorsed many functions of the IADR/AADR Dental Materials Group by serving as President, Scientific Program Chair, Group Chair and Chair of the Nominating Committee.

Supported by an endowment provided by the IADR Dental Materials Group, this is the oldest of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and consists of a monetary prize and a plaque. The award honors Dr. Wilmer Souder, the motivating force in establishing the Dental Section at the National Bureau of Standards, and is designed to encourage interest in dental materials research. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
