The National Microbiome Initiative Launches Today, AADR Member The Forsyth Institute is Recognized for its Commitment

Alexandria, Va., USA – Today, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) will hold an event to announce the official launch of the National Microbiome Initiative. Microbiomes are communities of microorganisms that live on and in people, plants, soil, oceans, and the atmosphere. Microbiomes maintain healthy function of these diverse ecosystems, influencing diverse features of the planet—human health, climate change, and food security. During the event, the Administration will announce steps to advance the understanding of microbiome behavior and enable protection and restoration of healthy microbiome function, including by investigating fundamental principles that govern microbiomes across diverse ecosystems, and developing new tools to study microbiomes.

AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship Becomes the First Endowed AADR Fellowship

Alexandria, Va., USA – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) is pleased to announce that the AADR Anne D. Haffajee Fellowship is the first endowed AADR Fellowship as part of the AADR Matching Campaign that launched in 2014. This Fellowship is endowed thanks to generous donors and the AADR Board of Directors, which is matching donations to fund the endowment at $250,000 allowing for at least one Fellowship of $10,000 to be granted annually. As the fund grows with additional contributions, additional fellowships and/or larger grants can be provided.

Yvonne Kapila, D.D.S., Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has accepted an appointment at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as vice chair of the Division of Periodontology, Department of Orofacial Sciences, effective June 1, 2016. 

Kapila obtained her B.A. in human biology from Stanford University, and her D.D.S., Ph.D. in oral biology, periodontics specialty certificate and postdoctoral fellowship training from UCSF. She became an assistant professor at UCSF in 1999 and was recruited to the University of Michigan in 2004, where she rose through the ranks to full professor with tenure. She was the first director of Global Oral Health Initiatives for the University of Michigan from 2011-2015.

IADR/AADR Publish Advances Issue on Dental Carious Lesion Management and Recommendations on Less Invasive Approaches

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) have published an issue of Advances in Dental Research on the International Caries Consensus Collaboration’s (ICCC) recommendations for carious lesion management and related terminology, developed from evidence-led consensus. Jo Frencken, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, Netherlands; JDR Associate Editor Nicola Innes, University of Dundee, Scotland; and Falk Schwendicke, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, served as guest editors of this special issue.

Gustavo Pompermaier Garlet Joins the JDR as New Associate Editor
