IADR Neuroscience Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Young Investigator Research Award

About:

The Award will be given to a young investigator who submits an outstanding clinical or basic research paper related to orofacial neuroscience at the General Session & Exhibition of the IADR. This Award consists of a cash prize ($1,000 USD) and a plaque, which will be awarded during the IADR Group Business Meeting. 

Eligibility:

• At the time of submission of their application, applicants must not have reached their 40th birthday and must be within 5 years after graduation of a research degree (i.e. MSc or PhD or equivalent). 
• The applicants must submit their abstract in the Neuroscience Category.
• It is not a requirement that the applicant is a member of the IADR Neuroscience Group.
• Current officers of the Neuroscience Group are not eligible for this Award. 
• Previous winners of the Award are not eligible.

Application Process:

• Applicants must submit their abstracts for the IADR General Session & Exhibition and will follow the normal format for a poster presentation. 
• Applicants must check the box on the on-line abstract application form to apply for this award. 
• Applicants must submit a separate letter or email to the President of the Neuroscience Group that informs the President of their application for the Award. This letter must include applicant's biography and a recommendation letter written by the member or collaborator.  A more detailed overview of their project (2 pages, double-spaced), should follow this letter and should include how the research will affect the basic science/clinical issues related to the Neuroscience Group’s research fields. The letter should reach the President by the date of the deadline for abstract submission.  See Contact below.

Criteria:
A maximum of 10 candidates for entry to the poster competition will be selected after pre-screening of the applicants’ abstracts and supporting materials by the judging panel described below.

• Abstracts will be judged based on the clarity of presentation, scientific strength, relevance, and potential impact. 
• Data presented in the abstract and poster should be unpublished at the time of abstract submission.
• The nominated candidates will be informed of their selection for the competition by mid-December in the year prior to the IADR General Session & Exhibition. 
• Applicants will present their findings in poster format. The applicants will be listed alphabetically by first author and will be run as a group. 
• The group of judges will spend 5 minutes at each poster: 2 minutes presentation by the candidates to the judges followed by 3 minutes of questions. 
• Judges will then meet to determine the winner (using predetermined criteria, see below) before the Business Meeting. 
• The judging process will be coordinated by the President of the Neuroscience Group or, if unable to attend the meeting, his/her nominee. The judging panel will consist of the Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, the President of the Neuroscience Group or his/her nominee, the Secretary/Treasurer or his/her nominee, and 3 additional members of the executive or Neuroscience Group. A nominee will be any member in good standing of the Neuroscience Group.

Judging will be based on:
1. The impact of the research on the field of neuroscience/TMJ will be substantial
2. The purpose or hypothesis is clearly stated
3. The methodology addresses the purpose or tests the hypothesis
4. The study design is innovative
5. Statistics are appropriately used to assess the data
6. The conclusions are based on the data
7. The poster presentation is well organized
8. The presenter is knowledgeable about the work being presented

Award:
 
The winner of the Award will be invited to attend the Business meeting at which the winner will receive the Award. The award will be a check that will be presented at the meeting and also an engraved plaque that will be presented to the winner either at the meeting or the plaque will be mailed to the recipient after the meeting. The judges may elect to recommend a runner-up for the award. The runner-up will receive a certificate after the meeting.
