Alexandria, Va., USA – The American Association for Dental Research (AADR) has announced Harold C. Slavkin as the 2016 recipient of the AADR Jack Hein Public Service Award. He will be recognized at the Association’s 45th Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Los Angeles, Calif., USA, on March 16, 2016, at the Opening Ceremonies. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the 40th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.
Slavkin is a past president of AADR (1993-94), and is currently a professor and dean emeritus at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, Calif., USA. In 2014, he retired from USC after 46 years on the full-time academic faculty. He served as dean of the dental school from 2000-2008. From 1995-2000, he served as the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) within the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., USA. One of the major accomplishments of his tenure at NIDCR was the completion of the first Surgeon General’s Report to focus exclusively on craniofacial and oral health; Oral Health in America was completed in May 2000.
His interests in health care policy, craniofacial genetics and developmental biology, biomaterials, and tissue engineering are reflected in 445 peer-reviewed scientific publications and 75 contributed chapters to various books in biomedical research. Slavkin is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine), a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of a number of scientific and dental organizations including the International and American Associations for Dental Research. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the 2016 ADEA Gies Award for Outstanding Vision by a Dental Educator.
“AADR is pleased to honor Dr. Harold C. Slavkin for contributions to health care policy and public service,” said AADR President Paul Krebsbach. “I applaud him for this achievement and his tireless efforts to advance dental, oral and craniofacial health.”
