Speaker: Vinicius Rosa (National University of Singapore, Singapore)
Sponsoring Group/Network(s): Dental Materials
Track Selection: C, E
Description: Publishing original and impactful research papers are perhaps one of the most important requirements to build up an independent scientific career. However, publishing a manuscript involves several, and equally important, phases that span from the acquisition of compelling data to the effective communication of the entire research process. As the years of postgrad training are mostly dedicated to the subject specialization and research activities, students are often only vaguely exposed to a myriad of aspects involved in the publication process that is generally championed by the supervisors and principal investigators. Thus, fresh graduates and early career researchers may not feel fully prepared to (or be even unaware of) many challenges involved in the publication process such as selecting the appropriate journal, coordinating with co-authors, preparing the draft and cover letter, and dealing with expectations and demands from the different parties involved in the peer-review process (editors, editorial board, admin and reviewers). In this Focused Learning Session, students and early career researchers will discuss the (i) essentials, challenges, and opportunities for effective communication of science and (ii) the editorial/reviewer perspectives toward successful submissions and publications.

Invited leading scholars and researchers will explore the current state and also identify emerging practices to further DEIB. In order to enhance the quality of research and innovation, DEIB approaches that minimize and reduce biases must be upheld in areas involving publication, research support, and research funding. Additionally, strategies must be designed and undertaken to address the following key areas: decolonizing the curriculum, inclusive education, cultural competence, creating a humanistic environment, racism, structural competency, inclusive and equitable recruitment and admissions practices, and gender equality. This also includes more inclusive representation in the sciences and dental research.
In this workshop, participants will outline, identify, and discuss DEIB issues and theoretical frameworks, and best practices for advancing DEIB impacting dental research and education, including their related implications. Additionally, they will take part in short vignettes and mini-case study scenarios, in dental research and education. Participants will further engage in discussions regarding how strategies can be used and adapted based on organizational cultures to move agendas forward related to DEIB topics. This includes assessing needs, identifying guiding principles and goals, and designing innovative strategies in dental education and research to address DEIB training needs, identify and propose guiding principles for related education research, fill knowledge gaps, and determine resources.HOW #3: Enhancing Educational Research Projects

Organizer(s): Arnaldo Perez (University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada); Maryam Amin (University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada)
Sponsoring Group/Network(s): Education Research
Description: Behaviors play an important role in dental education and clinical practice, including screening, prevention, and management of oral diseases. Changing oral health behaviors is possible but challenging as behaviors are usually determined by many factors at different levels (e.g., individual, family, community). Research has shown that most interventions fail to change behaviors because they are not data driven and theoretically informed, so that what needs to be changed and how is largely assumed as opposed to assessed. Current approaches to facilitate behavioral change suggest that facilitators, including care providers, should engage in the following steps: (1) recognizing a health issue caused by behavioral factors, (2) defining a target behavior, (3) identifying behavioral determinants, (4) selecting and applying proper behavioral change techniques, and (5) evaluating the impact of the behavioral intervention. Participants in this workshop will have the opportunity to learn and practice the actions involved in each step through situations and scenarios similar to those they encounter in clinical practice. Despite the importance of behavioral change to provide patient-centered care and prevent and manage oral health diseases, this content is insufficiently covered in dental programs and continuing dental education courses. -

Best Evidence Consensus Meeting on Peri-implant Disease and its Treatment
Sponsoring Group/Network(s): Implantology Research Group
Description:
Session 1: Best Evidence Consensus on Peri-implant Disease Animal Models
Session 2: Best Evidence Consensus on Peri-implant Bone RegenerationCurrent evidence has highlighted the public health burden of peri-implantitis and stressed the need to identify its pathogenetic mechanism and innovative treatment avenues.
A key component of this lies in developing clinically-relevant and reliable models of disease progression. The first session of this best evidence symposium will focus on small and large animal models of peri-implant disease and identify indications for their appropriate use. Global experts in the field will review the best practices for studying mucosal inflammation as well as inflammatory bone loss in vivo with reliable approaches. The second session will focus on best evidence on Peri-implant bone regeneration in animal models as well as humans. This session will build on the guidance of the first session to identify the best available evidence and draw guidelines for future work that can lead to comparability across studies. Collectively, this half-day satellite symposium is designed to provide the best available evidence on peri-implant disease development and its treatment and it is expected to lead to devising best practices for peri-implant research that are expected to advance the field vertically. The two consecutive sessions will take place in the same room.

Description: The annual Oral Epidemiology Forum (Epi Forum) addresses topics related to epidemiology, biostatistics, and population health as applied to dental, oral, and craniofacial research. The primary aim of this satellite symposium is to highlight and encourage the implementation of modern epidemiological methods by bringing together those who are conducting such research, leading the development of relevant methods, engaged in training in the area, or involved in funding or publishing population health research. The Epi Forum will begin with a keynote address focused on contemporary issues in epidemiological research relevant to oral health. A series of short talks will follow—presented are works in progress, typically focusing on theoretical epidemiology, statistical approaches in oral epidemiology, methodological issues and/or challenges in oral epidemiology, contributions of oral epidemiology to health policy, or research ethics. Prominently featured are presentations on epidemiology and/or biostatistics from pre-doctoral and graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and early career faculty who are conducting research in dental, oral, or craniofacial health. This year’s expanded Epi Forum will close with an interactive workshop on scientific publishing, designed to bring together trainees, early career researchers, and experienced researchers to discuss and learn more about manuscript writing and peer review. The Epi Forum includes significant opportunity for discussion and interaction, and reflections from all forum participants are highly encouraged.
