The Karring – Nyman SUNSTAR Award, sponsored
by the Sunstar Foundation, was a new award offered for the first time in
2017 through the IADR Periodontal Research Group.
The Karring – Nyman SUNSTAR Award aims at
supporting research within the field of oral tissue regeneration. The award
consisting of 10,000 Euro, will be conferred on an annual basis and in a
competitive way, based on an application for a research project within the
field of oral tissue regeneration.

objective is to provide funding primarily, but not exclusively, for a doctoral
student or post-doctoral scientist (within 24 months of successful completion
of a Ph.D. at the time of the submission deadline) to pursue research within the
field of oral tissue regeneration. The applicant must be student or full-member
of the IADR Periodontal Research Group (PRG) at the time of submission
deadline. There is no age restriction, but candidates less than 45 years will
be favored. Further, preference will be given to projects involving
collaborative research, where the recipient is spending time in another
laboratory – preferably in another country – in connection with the specific
project. The project may involve basic, pre-clinical in-vivo, or clinical
research, but projects with a clear translational or clinical component will be
favored. Occasionally, a priority topic will be announced and only projects
related to this will be eligible for evaluation.

during the General Session & Exhibition of the IADR. The amount of the
grant is for consumables and/or travel and lodging, but not for salary
compensation or institutional overheads.
- A research protocol (max 4, A4 pages, font size 12)
including the following
abstract (max 500 words) to allow initial screening
brief but concise background to the proposed research project
aims and objectives
description of the methods, including sample size/power estimates, and
20 references (not included in the 4 pages)
- A CV (max 2 pages) and a personal statement on how
the Award will benefit the applicant (max 1 page), including the applicant’s
IADR membership number.
- A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s
Department Head or Dean, who should be a member of the IADR PRG, including a
statement that the applicant will be allowed to spend time at the proposed

collaborating center, clearly stating that the equipment and resources needed
for the specific project will be provided.

Applications exceeding the word limit or page limit, or missing any of the above-mentioned documents will not be considered.
The judging panel will comprise from to 2 to 5 members of the PRG group with expertise in oral
tissue regeneration. No panel member should have any conflict of interest
regarding the proposed project. The main judging criteria will be importance
and scientific quality of the project, and executability within a 12-month
The project with the highest total rank score of the
judges (1st = 4, 2nd =3, 3rd =2, 4th =1) will be the winner. In the case of a
tie, the project with the greatest number of first rank scores will be the
winner. If there remains a tie, the Panels’ Chair will make the final decision.
The decision will be final and not open to appeal. The PRG reserves the right
to withhold an award.
Previous winners are allowed to re-apply, but
preference will be given to new applicants.
In accordance to the IADR Corporate
Sponsorship Policy, no corporate representatives may participate in the
scientific review process of the award, and the award is not tied in any way to
past, present, or anticipated business generated with the corporate sponsor,
that would lead to direct measurable financial benefit to the corporate sponsor
in exchange for the receipt of funding support.
Funding & Reporting
Funding will be provided in the form of a
check or a wire-transfer to the winner’s institution or the host laboratory.
The project should commence, at the latest, 6 months from the announcement of
the winner of the award at the annual business meeting of the PRG, held during
the General Session & Exhibition of the IADR.
The winner of the award must submit a short
report of the conducted project, including any results achieved, at the latest
14 months after commencing of the project.
The winner of the award must submit an
abstract for presenting results achieved through the project supported by the
award at the General Session & Exhibition of the IADR latest 2 years after
the award is conferred, i.e. for the first time, latest for the IADR 202
3. The winner should inform the PRG about the
submission and also on the acceptance of the abstract.
