Host-Microbiome Dialog Linking Oral-Systemic Diseases: Pathogenesis to Therapy

Published on: March 26, 2026

Alexandria, VA, USA – A symposium examining the host-microbe interaction and its role in oral health and disease was presented at the 104th General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 55th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 50th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research on March 25-28, 2026 in San Diego, CA, USA.

The host-microbiome interaction plays a pivotal role in linking oral and systemic diseases. Oral dysbiosis, an imbalance in the oral microbial community, can trigger or exacerbate various systemic conditions beyond oral health. This connection is multifaceted, involving several key mechanisms, such as bacterial translocation, elevated systemic Inflammation, molecular mimicry and immune dysregulation, and oral-gut axis.

This interdisciplinary symposium explored the complex and evolving host-microbe interaction that impacts oral health, aging, metabolic regulation, and systemic diseases. Through presentations by leading experts, this session highlighted cutting-edge research about the interplay between host, microbiome, metabolic pathways, and senescence biology, and showcased the emerging host modulation therapies aimed at restoring both oral and systemic health.

Organized by Xiaozhe Han, Nova Southeastern University, Davie, FL, USA and Sinem Sahingur, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA, the symposium, “Host-Microbiome Dialog Linking Oral-Systemic Diseases: Pathogenesis to Therapy” took place on Thursday, March 26 at 8 a.m. PDT (UTC-7).
