Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Nasir Bashir as the 2026 recipient of the IADR John Clarkson Fellowship. Bashir, from the University of Cambridge, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 104th General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 55th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 50th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research on March 25-28, 2026 in San Diego, CA, USA.
Bashir has held several clinical academic positions focused on oral epidemiology and the application of machine learning to biomedical data. He has additional training in mathematics and earned a Master’s degree in statistics. He currently holds a highly competitive Wellcome Trust fellowship at the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge, UK. Bashir was previously awarded an National Institute for Health and Care Research Academic Clinical Fellowship, and one of the first Academic Dental Foundation posts in the UK. Both positions enabled him to pursue independent research early in his career.
Bashir’s research centers on the development and application of mathematical methods to analyze large-scale, complex datasets and spans several high-impact areas at the intersection of dentistry and data science. His contributions to the field include the most up-to-date national statistics on the prevalence of dental caries in the United States, one of the earliest rigorous evaluations of machine learning algorithms in dentistry, the most comprehensive guide to Mendelian randomization in dental research, and the first ever application of multiverse analysis in the field of oral health.
The purpose of the IADR John Clarkson Fellowship is to allow investigators to obtain training and experience in dental public health at a center of excellence. The Fellow will receive funding for accommodation, subsistence, and travel (up to $15,000) following approval. The Fellowship is awarded every two years in honor of John Clarkson, who served as Executive Director of IADR/AADOCR from 1990-97.
