IADR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators

The award is for new investigators within 10 years of their first academic appointment. Research must have been initiated and conducted during this time.

Candidates must be a current full member of the IADR at the time of submission and entry into the competition.

Candidates must have an abstract accepted for the IADR General Session & Exhibition and meet all of the requirements for an accepted abstract, i.e. not presented or published elsewhere (unless it was a local Joseph Lister Award Competition to select the region representative.)

An abstract must be submitted to the Global Headquarters for the IADR General Session & Exhibition by the meeting abstract deadline, adhering to the usual submission procedures. If the applicant meets all of the eligibility requirements, they can self-select by ticking a box to enter the IADR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators.

Applicants may not apply simultaneously for the IADR Hatton Awards Competition or other travel grants supporting travel to this General Session.

All eligible abstracts will be reviewed by the IADR Joseph Lister Award Committee for research originality and potential for public health impact.

Ten (10) finalists will be selected, including at least one person from each of the following IADR regions: North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico), Latin America, Europe (including Israel), Africa/Middle East, and Asian/Pacific region (including the Indian sub-continent, Asia, China, Australia/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, excluding Hawaii and Guam). Two(2) finalists will be the two winners from the AADOCR Joseph Lister Competition. All finalists will be notified in writing before the meeting. Finalists will be accepted to present in oral presentation format only for the Competition. (Finalists will be scheduled a second time to present their science to the general public at the General Session in a poster or oral presentation, depending on final review by the Annual Session Committee.)

During the IADR General Session & Exhibition, the ten (10) finalists will give an oral presentation to the judging committee. Oral presentations will be a total of 15 minutes each, including a 10 minute presentation and 5 minute question and answer period from the Judges.

Finalists will be scheduled a second time to present their science at the General Session in a poster or oral presentation, depending on final review by the Annual Session Committee.

In judging, the Committee will weigh participation as follows: 40% for verbal presentation, 40% for question-and-answer period, and 20% for scientific merit.

The following will be considered:

1. Originality.
2. Clarity of Presentation.
3. Potential for Public Health impact.
4. Response to Judges’ questions.
5. Quality of the oral presentation.
6. Clear plan for next steps with the research.

First and second prize winners will be selected and awarded with a monetary prize, travel stipend and a plaque to be mailed after the meeting.
