Eligibility
  • Nominees must be full members of the IADR Periodontal Research Group (PRG) at the time of application.
  • A nominee shall have accomplished innovative and significant basic or clinical research related to prevention and non-surgical treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
  • There is no age restriction for this award.

Yvonne Hernandez-Kapila, University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Yvonne Hernandez-Kapila is a clinician scientist, academic/research leader with >30 years of experience. She received her BA from Stanford University then trained as a clinician-scientist at UCSF (DDS, PhD, Periodontology, Postdoctoral Scholar). She started her career at UCSF, then was recruited to the University of Michigan where she rose through the academic ranks to Full Professor; becoming inaugural Director of Global Health Initiatives. UCSF recruited her back in 2016 and she became Chair of Periodontology and R. Earl Robinson Distinguished Professor of Periodontology. In 2022, she was recruited to UCLA where she serves as Professor and Associate Dean of Research.
She’s made seminal discoveries on the cell/molecular biology mechanisms that govern periodontal disease and oral cancer pathogenesis; leading to >170 publications. She’s been continuously funded by NIH for >30 years; is current PI of 4 NIH grants: human virome/microbiome:U54;2 R01s;K12
