Andreas Stavropoulos Named Recipient of the 2025 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Andreas Stavropoulos as the 2025 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Research in Periodontal Disease. Stavropoulos, from Malmö University, Sweden, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 103rd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the IADR/Pan European Regional Congress on June 25-28, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.

Stavropoulos is Professor of Periodontology at Malmö University, Sweden, and also serves as Adjunct Professor at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, and the University of Bern, Switzerland. He was Professor Ordinarius at the University Clinics of Dental Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland from 2020-21. He completed his postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he also earned his Ph.D. and dr. Odont. degrees, with research focusing on preclinical and clinical studies in regenerative periodontal therapy and dental implants. He served as President of the European Federation of Periodontology in 2022-23 and remains a member of its executive committee.

Currently, he is Secretary and Treasurer of the IADR Periodontal Research Group, and a Board Member of the International Academy of Periodontology. He sits on the editorial boards of several respected dental journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical and Experimental Dental Research. Stavropoulos has authored ~250 publications, primarily in the fields of periodontal and bone regeneration, with a strong emphasis on translational research, along with several systematic reviews, book chapters, and educational communications.

The Research in Periodontal Disease Award is generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive Company. One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award recognizes, encourages, and stimulates outstanding achievements in research and its translation through clinical research in periodontal disease.
