Andrej Kielbassa Named Winner of the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Andrej Kielbassa as the 2024 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research. Kielbassa, from Danube Private University, Krems an der Donau, Austria, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA. 

Kielbassa is currently Professor and Head of the Centre for Operative Dentistry, Periodontology, and Endodontology at the University of Dental Medicine and Oral Health at Danube Private University. He was educated at the University of the Saarland and the Philipps University, both in Germany, earning his DDS in 1989 and his DMD in 1990. He finished his postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation/PhD) in 1998 at Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany.

From the beginning of his professional career, his research interests have covered a wide range within dentistry, including de- and remineralization of enamel and dentine, radiation damage to the dentition, saliva substitutes, preventive dentistry, dentine hypersensitivity, tooth wear, extrinsic/intrinsic staining and bleaching, endodontology, periodontology, and esthetic dentistry including implantology.

Kielbassa has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms, efficacy, and safety of drugs used to treat dental disease and associated symptoms, such as pain and peri-operative apprehension, and has focused his work on basic and clinical pharmacology studies of fluorides. He has 176 peer-reviewed publications in Web of Science and has 12,093 citations in Google Scholar. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the IADR/AADOCR William J. Gies Award in 2009 for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research

The Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy, or safety of drugs used in dentistry.
