Colman McGrath Named Winner of the 2024 IADR Distinguished Service Award

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Colman McGrath as the 2024 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Service Award. McGrath, from The University of Hong Kong, SAR, China, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 102nd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research and the 48th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, on March 13-16, 2024, in New Orleans, LA, USA. 

McGrath is a leading figure in behavioral, epidemiologic, and health service research with more than 13,500 citations of his work and has over 250 publications in ISI peer-review journals. He has two specific research foci: Dental Public Health (Behavior & Epidemiology) and Special Care Dentistry (SCD). He has long been a pioneering researcher of the impact of oral health on society and the impact of society on oral health (inequalities and oral health). He has contributed significantly to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks underpinning Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHQoL) that have brought understanding of the importance of behavioral sciences to oral health. 

In addition, McGrath has contributed in a leadership capacity within IADR, where he has served on the executive committee of Behavioral, Epidemiologic & Health Services Research (BEHSR) for more than a decade. These roles included International Year Director (2007), Councilor (2008, 2009), Symposium Coordinator (2010), President-elect (2011), President (2012), and Past President (2013). 

Sponsored by J. Morita Corporation, the IADR Distinguished Service Award was established by the IADR Board of Directors to recognize a member who has not served as an IADR Officer, but who has performed outstanding service to the Association or distinguished service over a period of time.
