Frank Scannapieco Named Recipient of the 2025 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Frank Scannapieco as the 2025 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Scannapieco, from the University at Buffalo, New York, USA, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 103rd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the IADR/Pan European Regional Congress on June 25-28, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.

Scannapieco is the SUNY Distinguished Professor of Oral Biology at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He received his D.M.D. from the University of Connecticut and both a Certificate in Periodontics and a Ph.D. in Oral Biology from the University at Buffalo. Since the completion of his formal academic training, he has served as a faculty member at the University at Buffalo.

His research has focused on oral microbiology, including mechanisms of dental plaque formation, saliva-bacterial interactions, salivary biomarkers of periodontal disease, and novel oral/systemic linkages. Scannapieco has published over 170 papers in referred journals that have been recognized by other well-respected researchers as having a direct positive impact on patient health care. He was the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Biology in 2019.

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research consists of a monetary award and plaque and is generously supported by Haleon. The award is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize outstanding research accomplishments in the field of geriatric oral research. This is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
