Georgios Tsakos Named Recipient of the 2023 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioral, Epidemiological, and Health Services Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Georgios Tsakos is the recipient of the 2023 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioral, Epidemiological, and Health Services Research. Tsakos, from University College London, England, UK, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 101st General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 9th Meeting of the Latin American Region and the 12th World Congress on Preventive Dentistry, that took place on June 21, 2023, in Bogotá, Colombia.

Tsakos is a Professor of Dental Public Health at University College London (UCL), UK. He completed his Diploma in Dental Surgery at the University of Athens. After that he earned a Master of Science in Dental Public Health followed by a PhD on the socio-dental impacts related to dental status in older people, both at the University of London, before moving to 
the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. 

Tsakos was President of both the European Association of Dental Public Health and the IADR Behavioral, Epidemiological, and Health Services Research Group, and is currently Chair of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe. He has contributed to the development of oral health indicators for the World Health Organization and is a member of the Oral Health Working Group of the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement and associated World Dental Federation programs. 

He has led an extensive program of highly influential research on subjective measures of oral health and quality of life, on oral health inequalities, and on ageing and population oral health. He has over 200 publications to his credit and is a regular keynote and invited speaker at national and international scientific conferences.

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Behavioral, Epidemiological, and Health Services Research is supported by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health and is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque, and is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize basic research in the field of biological mineralization.
