Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Gottfried Schmalz as the 2025 recipient of the IADR Gold Medal. Schmalz, from the University of Regensburg, Germany, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 103rd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the IADR/Pan European Regional Congress on June 25-28, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.
Schmalz received the prestigious IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pulp Biology Research in 2007. He is credited with numerous original scientific accomplishments in pulp biology and material biocompatibility research with further research in oral tissue regeneration. This has included the regeneration of periodontal and dental pulp tissues and the exploration of bioactive dental materials, which has contributed to significant advancements in restorative and regenerative dentistry.
Schmalz has served as President of the Contintenal European Division of the IADR (1986-87), Chair of the IADR Constitution Committee (2005-06), President of the IADR Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group (2007-08), President of the IADR Pan European Region (2014-16), and IADR Regional Board Member for the Pan European Region (2019-22), among many others.
The IADR Gold Medal is the highest recognition bestowed by the IADR. It is presented to a previous recipient of an IADR Distinguished Scientist Award who later builds on their original scientific achievements to more broadly impact science, health research, or population health through the expansion of their field into other disciplines, or through higher administrative positions in academia, government, non-profit, or private industry.
