IADR/AADOCR Announce the Journal of Dental Research Cover of the Year 2021

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) announced the IADR/AADOCR Journal of Dental Research Cover of the Year, 2021 for the paper, “Dental Pulp Stem Cell Polarization: Effects of Biophysical Factors.” The authors were recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.

In this study, authors Chang, B., Ma, C., Feng, J., Svoboda, K.K.H., and Liu, X described how dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have the potential to polarize, differentiate, and form tubular dentin under certain conditions. Identification of the factors that control DPSC polarization is a prerequisite for tubular dentin regeneration. The authors recently developed a unique bioinspired 3-dimensional platform that is capable of deciphering the factors that initiate and modulate cell polarization.

The bioinspired platform has a simple background and confines a single cell on each microisland of the platform. The effects of biophysical factors (surface topography, microisland area, geometry, tubular size, and gravity) on single DPSC polarization was explored. Collectively, this work provides information on DPSC polarization, paving the way for the development of new biomaterials for tubular dentin regeneration.

Selected by the IADR/AADOCR Publications Committee, the award honors the cover that features an aesthetically pleasing, scientifically novel image that enhances the impact of the article. All 13 JDR covers from 2021 were reviewed.
