Jason Griggs Named Recipient of the 2023 IADR Distinguished Scientist Wilmer Souder Award

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Jason Griggs is this year’s recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Wilmer Souder Award. Griggs, from the University of Mississippi, Jackson, USA, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 101st General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 9th Meeting of the Latin American Region and the 12th World Congress on Preventive Dentistry, that took place on June 21, 2023, in Bogotá, Colombia.

Griggs is currently the Vice-Chair, Division of Physics & Engineering, Mississippi Academy of Sciences, USA. Since 2008, he has served as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Mississippi, Oxford, USA, and as Associate Dean for Research, School of Dentistry, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, USA.

He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Florida, Gainesville, USA in the field of materials science. He then moved to Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas, USA as an Assistant Professor. In 2007, he was promoted to full Professor and became Chairman at the Department of Biomedical Materials Science at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He has supervised many MS and PhD students and written numerous book chapters.

Through his NIH-funded R01 grants, Griggs’s scientific work contributed to improving the strength of dental porcelain, developing test methods for ceramic fracture toughness measurements, and rapid testing methods for dental implants. He has presented several papers at the IADR and other scientific meetings and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed publications on this topic. He served as Vice-President and President for the IADR Dallas Section and chaired the AADOCR Science Information Committee. He has also served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Dental Research and Dental Materials.

The IADR Wilmer Souder Award recognizes excellence in the field of dental materials research among those scientists who, through research in this field, bring about outstanding advances in dental health. Established and supported by an endowment provided by IADR’s Dental Materials Group, the award is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
