Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, NIH/NIDCR, Bethesda, MD, USA, is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award. Webster-Cyriaque was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.
Webster-Cyriaque was recently named the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Previously, she was a Professor at the University of North Carolina in the Divisions of Craniofacial and Surgical Care, and Oral and Craniofacial Sciences, Adams School of Dentistry; Professor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine; Director, Viral Oral Infections in Immunosuppression and Cancer; and PI and Director, Mechanisms of Translation Realizing Discovery and Understanding the Pipeline CTSA Post-Doctoral Program.
She completed her BA and DDS at State University of New York at Buffalo; PhD, general practice residency, fellowships in infectious disease, and clinical research, all at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is a clinician-scientist providing care to vulnerable members of society including underserved and medically compromised populations. These individuals and their maladies inspire her research program, which addresses the provocative clinical problems encountered in her patient population. Her research has focused on the molecular basis of oral viral diseases and on translating these findings to patients. Studies by Webster-Cyriaque’s group contributed to our understanding of virus/host interactions that govern the development of oral disease and malignancy.
Within the IADR/AADOCR she has been an avid contributor to the Oral Medicine and Pathology group. As a founding member of the AADOCR diversity task force, she is passionate about increasing diversity in future academic leaders. She has also been involved with the Global Oral Health Inequities Research and the Women in Science networks.
One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone, and the oral soft tissue. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
