Karen Peres Named Recipient of the E.W. Borrow Memorial Award

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Karen Peres, National Dental Research Institute Singapore as the 2022 recipient of the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award. Peres was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.

Peres has made an outstanding scientific contribution to child oral health and research. Her work is characterized by the recognition that experience and incidence of oral diseases and oral health-related behaviors are socially determined and unequally distributed within and between countries. Peres has been working collaboratively with academics from Australia, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Iran, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, the United States, and Thailand in the field of life course oral health epidemiology, risk and protective factors to oral diseases based on birth cohort studies and population-based studies in these countries. 

Peres has supervised more than 30 masters and PhD students, and she is the author of 17 book chapters and 150 scientific peer-reviewed papers; those have received almost 10,000 citations, an H index of 59 (Google Scholar). Her extensive experience and contribution to child oral health and research includes Oral Health Birth Cohort Studies, Breastfeeding and Oral Health, Impact of Oral Health on Quality of Life, and Inequalities in Oral Health.

Sponsored by The Borrow Foundation, the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award recognizes and stimulates research in oral health prevention for children, with a priority for caries prevention where fluoride in different formats is utilized. This is the 31st year of the IADR E.W. Borrow Memorial Award, which consists of a plaque and a monetary award of $3,500 USD.
