Loc Do Named Recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Loc Do, The University of Queensland, Australia, is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award. Do was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.

Do is professor at the the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland, Australia. He completed a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the Alma-Ata Medical University, Soviet Union in 1990 and a Master’s degree in Dentistry at the University of Adelaide in 2001 where he also completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2005.

He has made meritorious contributions to the field of oral epidemiology and population oral health research. Some of his research contributions have been the forefront of important themes in population oral health and oral epidemiology. He has made contributions to research on improving the oral health of children and reducing socioeconomic inequalities in oral health, with a priority for caries prevention using different forms of fluoride while simultaneously reducing the risk of dental fluorosis. This theme was the topic of his PhD and continues to be one of the main themes of his current research program.

He has played a leading role in three national Workshops to develop and update Australian national guidelines on fluoride use. His research has also significantly contributed to a policy assessment of fluorides by the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Loc Giang Do’s publications have made major contribution to assessing both effectiveness and safety of fluoride use among children. He has published extensively and is a frequent speaker at national and international events.

IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award, one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, is supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company in memory of H. Trendley Dean, the 21st President of the IADR and first dental officer of the National Institutes of Health. The award consists of a monetary award and plaque and is given for meritorious research in epidemiology and public health. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
