Martin Thornhill Named 2021 Recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced Martin Thornhill, University of Sheffield, England, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research. Thornhill was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Thornhill is a Professor at the University of Sheffield, England in the School of Clinical Dentistry. He received his B.D.S. at King’s College, London, England and completed his Ph.D. at the University of London, England. Thornhill has had a long career in translational research studies covering the full spectrum of basic laboratory science through to clinical trials. This has resulted in 156 peer reviewed papers, 21 books/book chapters and 315 presentations/abstracts at meetings.

Thornhill is an active clinical researcher in translational research in dentistry. This broad field links clinical and scientific research in dental and medical subject areas which is increasingly recognized as helpful especially in stimulating research in oral medicine. His work has also been involved with studies and treatments of numerous conditions of the oral mucosa.

The Pharmacology/Therapeutics/Toxicology Research Award is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award is made for outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy or safety of drugs used in dentistry and consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
