May Wong Named 2021 Recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced May Wong, University of Hong Kong, SAR, China, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award. Wong was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Wong is a Professor of Dental Public Health in the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China. She initially joined the Faculty in 1993 as an assistant research officer and subsequently moved to be a junior faculty member after obtaining her Ph.D. in 2001. She has since then been promoted to be associate professor and professor in 2007 and 2015 respectively.

Wong’s research interests include biostatistics – multilevel modeling, structural equation modeling, longitudinal data analysis, item response theory; oral epidemiology – life-course epidemiology, oral health status of members in the family, orofacial pain; clinical trials – caries prevention, family-centered oral health promotion and quality of life research – development, translation, validation and psychometric testing of quality of life instrumentation. May has published 119 scientific articles and has been invited to give lectures and hold workshops at international and regional scientific meetings.

Wong is the current President-elect of the IADR Southeast Asian Division and served as president of the IADR Evidence-based Dentistry Network (2014-16).

IADR Distinguished Scientist H. Trendley Dean Memorial Award, one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, is supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Company in memory of H. Trendley Dean, the 21st President of the IADR and first dental officer of the National Institutes of Health. The award consists of a monetary award and plaque and is given for meritorious research in epidemiology and public health. It is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
