Michael Brennan Named Recipient of the 2025 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine & Pathology Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Michael Brennan as the 2025 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine & Pathology Research. Brennan, from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, USA, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 103rd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the IADR/Pan European Regional Congress on June 25-28, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.

Brennan is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Medicine/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, a Fellow of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and holds a Fellowship in Dental Surgery in Oral Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Brennan was awarded the Samuel Charles Miller Award in 2019 and the Jonathan Ship Award in 2023, both from the American Academy of Oral Medicine. Brennan is co-PI of a multimillion NIH-NIDCR U01 grant entitled, “Clinical Registry of Dental Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancer Patients,” and the PI of multiple clinical trials. He has authored nearly 200 publications and book chapters to date.

One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, the Oral Medicine & Pathology Research Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The Award recognizes outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity and associated structures, principally encompassing skin, bone, and the oral soft tissue.
