Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) has announced Thomas Attin as the 2025 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award. Attin, from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 103rd General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the IADR/Pan European Regional Congress on June 25-28, 2025 in Barcelona, Spain.
Attin completed his doctorate studies in 1992, and received his Ph.D. (Privatdozent) in 1997 in the field of caries etiology, prevention, and treatment. From 2000-06, he was chairman of Operative Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry at the University of Göttingen, Germany. In 2006, he was appointed chairman and full professor at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Since then, he has served as director of the Clinic for Conservative and Preventive Dentistry.
Attin’s impact on the field of dental caries research is is evidenced by 35,000 citations, hundreds of articles and presentations, and an H-index of >100. Immunology and biochemistry are two areas of study in which he engages in interdisciplinary research, and he is frequently invited as a guest lecturer in institutes around the world.
Supported by Kenvue, the William H. Bowen Research in Dental Caries Award is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding and innovative achievements that have contributed to the basic understanding of caries etiology and/or to the prevention of dental caries. It is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
