William Giannobile Named Recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Research in Periodontal Disease Award

Alexandria, VA, USA, June 22, 2022 – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that William Giannobile, Harvard University, Boston, USA is the recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Research in Periodontal Disease Award. Giannobile was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 100th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 5th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Region on June 20-25, 2022.

Giannobile is a Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity and the Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He received his DDS degree from the University of Missouri, his Certificate in Periodontics followed by a Dr Med Sc degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and his post-doctoral training at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. 

Prior to his current position, he served as the Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, and as a Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. 

Giannobile is a prolific scientist who has published more than 250 original publications and has a Google Scholar Index of 90 with more than 25,700 citations. His research output spans over a broad range of topics, ranging from genetic and epigenetic strategies in preventive dental care, to saliva-based diagnostics for the detection of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, to 
bio-engineering approaches to the reconstruction of periodontal tissues. He is a widely respected member of the periodontal research community and has already received several prestigious awards. 

He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research from 2010 to 2020.

The Research in Periodontal Disease Award is generously supported by Colgate-Palmolive Company. One of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, it is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque, and is designed to recognize, encourage, and stimulate outstanding research achievements in research and its translation through clinical research in periodontal disease.
