Kazuhiro Tsuga Named Recipient of the 2023 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research

Alexandria, VA, USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced that Kazuhira Tsuga is the recipient of the 2023 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research. Tsuga, from Hiroshima University, Japan, was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the 101st General Session of the IADR, which was held in conjunction with the 9th Meeting of the Latin American Region and the 12th World Congress on Preventive Dentistry, that took place on June 21, 2023, in Bogotá, Colombia.

After graduating from the Faculty of Dentistry at Hiroshima University and obtaining his Ph.D., Tsuga continued his clinical practice, education, and research work in the Department of Advanced Prosthodontics at the Institute of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University. In addition to being a chief professor and chief of the medical department, Dr. Tsuga currently serves as Vice President of Hiroshima University.

Tsuga's research covers a wide range of topics in prosthodontics and gerodontology, and he has published over 100 papers in international scientific journals. He is most highly regarded for his research on the oral function of old people, and the tongue pressure meter he developed has been widely used for detecting oral hypofunction in Japan. It has recently become available in Europe and Asia as well. 

He has received many awards from Japanese academic societies, particularly for his achievement on tongue pressure measurement. He received the prestigious Watanabe Ikuma Award from the Japanese Society of Gerodontology, which is rare for an individual researcher. Tsuga has been a member of the IADR Geriatric Oral Research Group and the European College of Gerodontology for over 20 years. He is also an Editorial Board member of Gerodontology

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Geriatric Oral Research consists of a monetary award and plaque and is generously supported by Haleon. The award is designed to stimulate, encourage, and recognize outstanding research accomplishments in the field of geriatric oral research. This is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.
