IADR Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Group

This annual award is designed to stimulate and recognize outstanding achievements in the areas of behavioral science, epidemiology, and health services research as they relate to dentistry. Evidence must be presented that the nominee has conducted original investigations related to dentistry in any of the disciplines involved with behavioral sciences, epidemiology, or health service research.

The Giddon Award for Distinguished Research in the Behavioral Sciences is awarded annually and recognizes a single research investigation in the fields of social or cultural anthropology, education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and social work applied to dentistry. Both applied and basic research manuscripts are eligible.

The Aubrey Sheiham Award for Distinguished Research in Dental Public Health Sciences is awarded annually and is intended to recognize excellence in dental public health research. This field includes research in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, community-based prevention or health promotion, environmental health, health economics or health policy as applied to dentistry.

These awards recognize excellence in behavioral sciences, epidemiology, and health services research by students who are presenting an abstract at the IADR meeting. Up to one award is given annually to a pre-doctoral student and one to a post-doctoral student/trainee.

This was created by BEHSR in recognition of the outstanding contribution Dr. Lois Cohen has made over the course of her career to the field of oral health-related research in general, and the fields of behavioral, social science, public health, and international research in oral health in particular. Dr. Cohen led in the development of subjective, patient-based indicators in oral health and in the study of oral health delivery systems, and subsequently became a leader in the creation of opportunities in dental public health research, particularly international work promoting partnerships among researchers in the developing and industrialized world. There are two categories of awards presented annually, for a student (predoctoral or postdoctoral) and an early career faculty member who are presenting abstracts at the IADR meeting, to assist in travel funding to attend the conference.

The Lion Dental Research Award is intended to support improvements in oral health sciences through the stimulation of junior researchers by recognition of outstanding and innovative research in basic dental science for the improvement of public dental health; and recognition of applied research achievements for improvement and development of oral care products for the prevention or oral diseases. The Lion Award is presented every other year in the area of Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research. This award is made possible by a generous donation from the Lion Corporation, Tokyo, Japan.

The Award recognizes a single research investigation published, or accepted for publication, within a given calendar year. The recognized research can involve the discovery or exploration of new manifestations of inequities, or new concepts in understanding inequities in oral health, or new approaches to addressing inequities in oral health care.
